COVER FEATUREPushing through the heavy arcade doors of this former church-turned-home in Middleton, built in 1863 as a Primitive Methodist chapel, I think of those who passed through before me.
Farmers praying for rain, mothers for their children. People bargaining with their God in the way only the broken ever do. Ceremonies of marriage, life and death.
A thousand months of Sundays spent in reverence as people seek salvation from the elements, and one another.
ARTIST FEATUREThe jetty poles at Port Willunga have long captured the imagination. The weathered remnants of the second jetty, built in the 1860s and ultimately claimed by crashing waves and relentless tides, are now among the most photographed scenes
in the region.
The jetty remnants are also the subject of countless paintings, created from the late nineteenth century and continuing to the present day. A selection of these works was featured in Painting Port Willunga, a survey exhibition showcasing a range of artists, recently held at Waverley Park Homestead in Willunga.
HOME FEATUREPerched high above the grazing pastures of Hindmarsh Valley, a newly transformed home sits quietly within its landscape.
Located on the property Ponderosa, this adaptive re-use project has been shaped by heritage, contemporary craftsmanship and a close family collaboration between Chris and Tracey Smith, their son Lewis Smith and their team at Collectiv Group. Chris and Tracey purchased Ponderosa in 2020, drawn immediately to its scale, sweeping views and proximity to the coast, just minutes
from Port Elliot and Victor Harbor. Fenced paddocks, multiple dams and vast open skies define the property.
HOME FEATUREOn the hunt for ideas for their kitchen and living room renovation, homeowners Tim and Lisa attended a design day at German hardware manufacturer Blum. As luck would have it, Nathan Wundersitz of SpaceCraft was one of the speakers.
Tim and Lisa had seen examples of SpaceCraft’s work in a mid-century modern style and knew they wanted that same aesthetic for the renovation. Add SpaceCraft’s forte in built-in furniture – a modernist design must – and they knew they had found their match.
DESTINATION FEATUREWhen most people think of Port Elliot, a few images inevitably spring to mind: Horseshoe Bay, the Port Elliot Bakery, one of the Fleurieu’s best beach towns – bursting into life over summer yet remaining an excellent walking, eating and shopping destination year round. In reality, Port Elliot is also a nexus for artisans, creatives and people intent on making a positive impact on the community they love. Oh, and coffee – so much coffee – each venue putting its own spin on largely local roasters.
DESTINATION FEATUREHaving travelled to Kangaroo Island on numerous occasions, I still look forward to what I consider a quintessential KI road-trip moment. Just after disembarking at Penneshaw from the Sealink ferry, and only a few kilometres in, we reach the mallee arbors along Hog Bay Road, and that’s when I know we’ve truly arrived. On this visit, we were fortunate to road-test the 5-Day Gourmet Explorer Self-Drive Package, one of the many experiences on offer from SeaLink.
